Holiday Celebrations. Relax and Enjoy!

It is easy to get caught up in the holiday shopping, sales, decorating and cooking.   People often run themselves ragged trying to fulfill holiday expectations and family traditions.  This can be the most stressful time of year between holiday gatherings and family expectations.   Holiday traditions are great for every family and important for families to share with their children.   Don’t let these holiday traditions get in the way of enjoying time with your family and relaxing.  We can often get caught up in these expectations but take time to think about why it is important to you.  Additionally work and holiday parties often bring us additional stress and expectations.   Commit to the activities and social gathering you will enjoy.  Try not to over-commit yourself if it is going to add to your stress.  Do what you want and what it best for your family this season.

Psychology Today has great articles posted on their website about managing holiday stress at https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/archive?search=holidays&op=Search

This holiday season take time to remember what is important to you and your family.  Remember to celebrate what you are most thankful for.  Pass on to your children the tradition of giving and doing good for others.   There are great volunteer opportunities for the whole family to participate in together.  Take your children to an elderly home to read books or play games with someone who doesn’t have their family with them.  Wrap presents together for families and children in need or allow your children to pick a toy to donate to Toys-For-Tots. Volunteer Fairfax has suggestions for things your family can do this Holiday season. http://www.volunteerfairfax.org/individuals/holiday.php

Try not to start planning your after-the-holidays diet already or the return/exchange errands you need to make.   Designate two to three days that will not involve planning your 2015 agenda.   Make those days family days or days to give back to the community.
