May TOPIC: The Language of Play- Identifying 10 Core Themes in Play Therapy
Children often communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through play rather than words. This Play Therapy Café will explore how to identify and understand ten core themes that commonly emerge in play therapy, providing clinicians with a framework for interpreting the deeper meaning behind a child’s play.
Participants will learn how to recognize recurring patterns such as anger, power and control, nurturance, self-esteem and protection/safety themes and understand how these play therapy themes reflect a child’s internal world. The training will also focus on how play therapy themes evolve over time, how they inform treatment planning, and how to document them in a clinically meaningful way.
Through case examples and discussion, clinicians will gain practical strategies for using play therapy themes to guide interventions and support caregiver understanding.
