Our Approach to Mental Health Care
At Crossroads Family Counseling Center, we prioritize exploring therapeutic and non-medication interventions for children, such as play therapy, individual adolescent therapy or family therapy, before considering medication. We have found that these methods often produce positive changes that can negate the need for medication. However, we recognize the benefits of integrating psychiatric services and medication when appropriate and necessary.
Mental health is a vital part of everyone’s overall health, and we have made a lot of progress as a society in recognizing the importance of effective identification and treatment of conditions that may affect mental health without stigma.
Psychiatric evaluations, and psychiatric services should be viewed as part of the toolset that can be accessed at Crossroads Family Counseling Center, as necessary, to support your child, adolescent or adult family member in their therapeutic process.
Sarah McCarthy will work closely with our team of therapists to provide a psychiatric evaluation, as necessary. Her integrated involvement ensures direct communication and seamless care coordination for your child and family, all in one supportive environment. Sarah will also consult and connect with your primary care physician regarding psychiatric services we provide, as another important part of managing your family’s overall healthcare holistically.
Ultimately, psychiatric services involving medication may be used synergistically with therapy to support progress.
What is Involved in a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a critical first step to providing appropriate psychiatric services. The psychiatric evaluation is similar to any routine medical assessment in that the medical practitioner asks questions, assesses individual and family medical and mental health histories and, on a case-by-case basis, uses standardized assessments and diagnostic tools to evaluate and better understand what kinds of special support may be useful to help a child, adolescent or adult family member.
Psychiatric Services Areas of Focus
Sarah provides psychiatric services, including psychiatric evaluations and treatment, for a range of mental health concerns, including:
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Mood Disorders
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Sleep Disorders
- Women’s Mental Health
Please note: Psychiatric services do not encompass neuropsychological evaluations, developmental disorders or learning disabilities. If neurological or developmental/learning disabilities are believed to be present, we will recommend that we involve your primary care physician and work to refer you to appropriate specialists for additional input and support.
