Amanda Harrington, PhD, LPC is a National Certified Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor and EMDR certified. She has a background in educational psychology and counseling and nearly two decades experience working with children and adolescents. Through her career as both an educator and clinician, she has gained expertise in helping parents and caregivers to better understand themselves as well as to learn realistic parenting strategies necessary to work through challenges with the children in their lives. As a military spouse, she has had the opportunity to work with families, couples, and individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and settings within the United States and abroad.
While Amanda’s area of expertise is in treating trauma and anxiety based disorders, she also has experience working with a variety of mental health diagnoses and struggles in both adults and children to include depression, grief and bereavement, self harm, sexual and gender identity exploration, burnout, eating disorders, anger management, self esteem related issues, obsessive or compulsive behaviors, and adjustment disorders following divorce, moves, or other disruptive transitions or phase of life changes.
Amanda is an integrative counselor and practices from existential and person-centered foundations. She relies on interventions pulled from various models and approaches including CBT, DBT, mindfulness, polyvagal theory, EFT, art therapy, and EMDR as well.
What does all that really mean? Well, it means therapy with Amanda prioritizes the relationship between client and counselor. She believes the most important tool for growth begins with trust, connection, knowledge, and active engagement within the therapeutic alliance. A peek inside a session with Amanda is just as likely to yield laughter, dancing, and creative expression as it will deep conversations, tears, and biofeedback. This is because she feels each client requires a therapeutic experience that is grounded in research and tailored to his/her/their individual challenges, needs, and backgrounds.
Amanda completed both her Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision and her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University, and her Bachelors in Psychology and Education from McNeese State University.
